The Floridan Aquifer — Your Water Source
FL's water comes from one of the world's most productive aquifers, but naturally high in hardness minerals (calcium, magnesium), sulfur compounds, and iron. FL homeowners spend more per capita on in-home water treatment than any other Southern state.
Sulfur Odor — Broward & Pasco Are Worst
H2S levels of 0.1–0.5 mg/L are common in aquifer-fed systems. The 'rotten egg' smell is strongest in the morning when water has sat overnight. Carbon filters don't remove H2S — an oxidizing filter is required.
Hard Water by FL Region
SW FL (Naples) 300–400 mg/L — hardest in state. South FL (Miami-Dade/Broward) 200–280 mg/L. Tampa Bay 150–220 mg/L. Jacksonville/NE FL 80–120 mg/L (softer). Hard water shortens water heater lifespan from 12 to 7–8 years.
PFAS Contamination in FL
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances ('forever chemicals') detected near FL military bases (Pensacola, Tyndall, Jacksonville NAS). EPA's 2024 MCL of 4 ppt for PFOA/PFOS requires treatment in affected areas. Reverse osmosis removes >90% of PFAS.
FL DEP MCL Standards & Your CCR
FL adopts EPA Maximum Contaminant Levels. Your utility must provide an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). Review your CCR before selecting a system — target the specific contaminants present.
FL Water Issues — Treatment Guide
| Issue | FL Regions | Best System | Cost Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard water | SW FL, South FL | Water softener | $800–2,800 |
| Sulfur odor | Pasco, Hillsborough, Polk | Oxidizing filter | $800–2,400 |
| Chlorine taste | All municipal | Carbon filter | $500–1,600 |
| Iron staining | North FL, wells | Iron filter | $1,000–2,400 |
| Bacteria (well) | Rural FL | UV + sediment | $700–1,500 |
| PFAS / VOCs | Near mil. bases | RO system | $3,000–10,000 |
Under-Sink RO vs. Whole-House RO
| Feature | Under-Sink RO | Whole-House RO |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | One faucet | Entire home |
| Cost | $300–800 | $3,000–10,000 |
| Waste water | 3:1 ratio | 2:1 ratio |
| Flow rate | 50–75 GPD | Full house pressure |
| Best for | Drinking water | PFAS / high TDS |
Well Water Warning
FL has 1.2 million private wells not regulated by FL DEP. Well water should be tested annually for coliform bacteria, nitrates, pH, hardness, iron, and H2S. A UV system is strongly recommended for any FL well water supply.
Water Heater Efficiency
Hard water scale reduces water heater element efficiency by up to 29% per DOE studies. A water softener before your water heater can add 3–5 years to its lifespan and save $100–200/year in energy costs.
FL Licensing Requirement
Whole-house water treatment installation requires a FL-licensed plumber (FS 489). The plumber must pull a permit for any work involving the main water supply line or water heater connections. Verify at myfloridalicense.com.
